Calumet City or “Cal City” as its commonly referred to is a thriving suburb just south of Chicago and the home of fictional characters Jake & Elwood from the Classic Chicago film the Blues Brothers. Calumet City shares its borders with Burnham, Lansing, South Holland, Dolton, Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. In fact, before the name was changed in 1923, Calumet City was actually known as West Hammond since it relied so heavily on the industries in Hammond.
When Indiana went dry in 1916, West Hammond as it was called became an attractive watering hole for the drinkers of northwest Indiana. Bootleggers like Al Capone built on this base when national Prohibition came into play, and the town of just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago gained a reputation as a “Sin City”, before the name because synonymous with Las Vegas
